Time to Spring Clean Your Health

Springtime is all about new beginnings, which makes it a perfect time to start healthy routines.

Getting ahead of seasonal allergies

Springtime brings flowers, fresh air, and outdoor allergens. It’s a good time to minimize any exposure to allergens such as pollen by catching up on your spring cleaning. If you experience outdoor allergies, it may be helpful to try a nasal saline solution. These can be found over the counter or you can make your own using a neti-pot to flush out any allergens from your nasal passages.

Spend more time outdoors (sun)

Sunlight not only gives our bodies vitamin D, but it can also help improve our moods. Keeping yourself active and outdoors can help improve your overall mental health and give you the energy you need to get through the day.

Protect Skin and Eyes From Damaging UV Rays

While you’re soaking up some Vitamin D, make sure to avoid the sun's harmful rays. Remember to wear sunglasses to protect your eyes and apply sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection every couple of hours to minimize any damage to your skin.

Eat In-Season Fruits and Vegetables

Spring and summer are the perfect time to incorporate more fresh fruits and vegetables into your diet. Dr. Misbah K. Keen, MD, a professor of family medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, recommends “visiting farmer’s markets and shopping for organic produce when possible, especially for fruits and vegetables that you eat whole from the outside, like apples or cherries.”

Build a healthier sleep schedule

With the change in seasons comes a change in daylight. It’s important to reset your sleep schedule. Some simple ways to increase your sleep health is by: avoiding large meals 2 hours before bed, avoid alcohol for 4 hours before bed, don’t use electronic devices before bed, and avoid caffeine in the afternoon. Making sure you sleep at the same time every night can help your body adapt to the new schedule.
